Have you been wondering how to get access to Google Search Console?
Access requests are a huge part of onboarding, whether you're a marketing agency, a freelancer, or a business owner.
..and we understand the headaches they can cause! 😭
Over 90% of customers think that companies could improve their onboarding process, so streamlining access requests for your client’s Google Search Console account is crucial.
Let’s take a look at the easiest ways you can access your clients’ Google assets. 👇
What is Google Search Console?
Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool that allows users to monitor how Google interacts with their website.
While it can’t substitute for effective marketing strategies, Google Search Console is instrumental in revealing how Google crawls, indexes, and serves websites to users.
These insights are particularly invaluable for analyzing a website’s SEO performance and identifying potential technical issues that may impact ranking on Google.
Here’s how you can use Google Search Console data:
- Performance reports: This functionality can help you understand how customers find your website.
- Links reports: These are useful for tracking internal links and backlinks to your website.
- Index coverage reporting: This can highlight whether your site has any Google indexing issues.
Why Do You Need to Grant or Request Access to Google Search Console?
If a marketing agency or freelancer takes care of your website’s marketing and SEO, they will need access to your Google assets and analytics. This will likely include your Google Search Console account.
Are you an agency or freelancer who needs quick access to your client’s Google assets? This article shows you the easiest way to get access to them.
What’s the Difference Between Google Search Console and Google Analytics?
Google Analytics provides detailed information about a website’s traffic through tracking and analysis of user behavior.
From insights into the origins of traffic to what device they used to enter your site, Google Analytics is the best tool for understanding and enhancing user experience on your website.
Search Console focuses on search-related metrics (i.e. search terms) and the particular interactions between your website and Google’s search engine.
From site map submissions to crawl stats reports, Search Console allows you to dive deep into the details of how Google ranks your site.
Analyzing the journey of the user to Google search provides valuable insights, making it ideal for refining a website’s SEO strategies.

For Search Console Owners: How to Add User to Google Search Console (Step-By-Step Guide)
Here’s how to share Google Search Console access with your marketing agency or freelancer:
- Login to Google Search Console and choose the correct property
A Search Console property refers to the specific website in the account to which you intend to grant access.
- In the bottom left corner, click on Settings:
- Click on Users and permissions
- You will see a list of users who have access to your account; click the blue ADD USER box on the left
- Enter the email address of the person you want to add, choose the desired permission level and click ADD
In the Users and permissions section, you can choose the level of access you want to give them.
It’s possible to edit the level of access you grant at any time. Click on the permission type next to the user’s name and change it.
There are three user permission levels:
Permissions Level: Owner
This is the highest level of access granted to users.
A verified owner has complete control over the property and all associated settings. This includes:
- Ability to add and remove users
- Authority to perform ownership verification
- Access all data and reports
- Submit sitemaps
Each Google Search Console property must have at least one verified owner. This is a user who verified ownership of the property using a token such as an HTML file or HTML tag uploaded to the website.
Other users with this permission level are categorized as delegated owners.
A delegated owner has been granted ownership status by a verified owner without the use of a verification token. They typically have similar permissions to the owner.
Permissions Level: Full
Users with full access have complete view access to most data and can perform some actions such as:
- Verifying fixes
- Requesting reconsideration for website indexing
- Sitemap submissions
Full-access users aren’t permitted to add users.
Permissions Level: Restricted
Users with a restricted permission level typically have view-only rights to some of the data.
This includes:
- Performance reports
- Index coverage reports
- Crawl rate
This level of access is typically given to users who need access to specific information or tools within the property but do not require full administrative control.
Once you select the user's permission level, they will receive an email to notify them you gave them access. They need to click Accept and they will have the permissions you granted.
